Cake 0144: Tiramisu Dress

I was never that happy with the top that I made from this pattern, the underbust seam never sat right and it was too clingy. After seeing all the great versions at the Melbourne social shopping event though I figured it was worth another go.

This version is made from a cotton interlock from the clearance bin at The Fabric Store and the midriff band is black Ponte from the Alannah Hill outlet.
This fabric is a bit thicker and sits so much better! So I'll be using a plain interlock from now on, no more lightweight knits.

Pattern adjustments - the back is a 45, front is a 40D and the waistband/skirt is a 42.5". I extended the sleeves by 1.5" and widen them slightly by about .5". I find the pockets a bit floppy but not sure what can be done about that, plus just having pockets is worth it!

I am so glad I had another go at this pattern, it is just so comfortable and it skims the lumps and bumps so nicely. I actually jus cut out another one ready to sew up!

  4. So cute, love the contrast waistband. I'm in the process of sewing up a second version in a much slinkier knit than my first. Fingers crossed that it turns out ok! I am definitely concerned about the fabric weight. Thanks for the tip on the interlock, that may have to be my third version, especially if this one doesn't turn out!

    1. Thanks! I always seem to struggle with the different weights of knits, I end up with heaps of wadders with each version but then everyone else seems to find knits so easy!

  7. Loving it Suzy - and would you believe, I sewed up one of these on the weekend too (mine goes up on my blog tomorrow morning - also with a twirling photo)! Now I think that I should make another with a contrast waistband after all, yours looks so great.

    1. The contrast band is a bit heavier weight too so its not at all clingy around my midriff which is just how I like it! I loved your version too.

    1. Thanks Ruth. I actually just read an post on the perfect skirt length and because my thigh and calves are the same length supposedly I'm meant to have my skirts hit me straight across the knee. First time I've tried it on this dress (I usually hem them longer) and I think it works!

  15. I'm so glad you had another go at this pattern as this dress has turned out great. I made mine with a heavier knit as well and I think it definitely helps make a difference with skimming over those little lumps and bumps as it skims over mine well too. Looking forward to seeing your next one too :)

  16. Very, very nice. The contrast colour band really makes this for me. How awesome is ponte? I wish it were more readily available...

  17. Could you go back and add a woven fabric to the pockets to stabilize them?
