Taffy Blouse: Lace version

I went to the best garage sale the other weekend where I managed to pick up about 3 metres of this pretty lace for a couple bucks! I've been wanting to make a top like this for a while but the last one I tried turned into a wadder - I used a cowl neck top pattern and the underlined lace was too thick to drape nicely so this time I picked the taffy blouse with its nice simple lines

The underlining is a jersey knit and I made my own bias binding (which has rippled, anyone know why? Is it because its too wide or did I stretch it too much/not enough?). I didn't do french seams like it tells you in the instructions because with the layers of lace and knit it would have been too thick so I've just serged all the seams.

I think it turned out quite pretty, I like the flutter sleeves and how the tie can be tied at the back or front.

  1. I love this! I like the slightly heavier fabric making the sleeves less 'wingy'...does that make sense?

  2. I love this - I've had a lacy taffy in my head since I first saw that book. Although my mental taffy is just lacy with a cami underneath... it's still residing in my mental list at the moment.
I love that lace!! $3! Amazing!

    1. Thankyou! I was originally going to do a plain lace taffy without the underlining but I figured I'd wear it more often if it was underlined.

  3. OMG! I am so style stalking this bad boy :) I'm thinking that the rippling could be from there not being enough give in your binding. Are the ripples taunt or all floppy?

    1. Thanks Amanda! The ripples are fairly floppy and have a bit of give, maybe I didn't do it tight enough?

  4. Love your new top. It is the perfect base for a lace top. The purple underlining is a lovely pop of colour.

The rippling could be caused by the fabric being slightly off grain before you cut the binding.

    1. Thanks Marie! I did check the grain beofre I cut but thats not to say it isn't off! I'm wondering if I should have stretched the binding a bit when I ironed it through the bias binder maker?

  11. Your lace top is lovely. A good idea to line it so that you don't need to wear a cami underneath. The pop of colour is great. Lucky you for a terrific find.
